Jan Davidsz de Heem (circa 1606–1684) was a Dutch-born painter who became one of the greatest still life artists of the 17th century. Working in both Utrecht and Antwerp, he mastered the pronkstilleven, or “showpiece still life,” blending Dutch precision with Flemish richness. His paintings are celebrated for their intricate detail, luminous color, and symbolic depth, often uniting flowers, fruit, insects, and luxurious vessels in lavish yet balanced compositions.
Vase of Flowers, painted around 1660–1670, exemplifies his artistry. A profusion of lilies, roses, tulips, and other blooms spills from a blue glass vase, mingling with ripe fruit, curling vines, butterflies, and bees. Set against a dark background, the vivid colors and fine textures appear almost tangible. While the arrangement celebrates nature’s abundance, the inclusion of fading petals and delicate creatures serves as a subtle reminder of life’s fleeting beauty.
