Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867–1956) was a celebrated British painter, printmaker, and designer known for his bold compositions, expressive brushwork, and decorative approach to natural subjects.
Painted in 1921, The Swans is a later work in his career and reflects his gift for transforming simple references into rich, atmospheric scenes. The two elegant swans in the foreground were inspired in part by a taxidermy specimen in his studio, while the bright nasturtiums at their feet came from a small tub of flowers he kept nearby.
Through Brangwyn’s masterful use of color, texture, and light, these modest elements become a serene and timeless composition. Today the painting is held in the William Morris Gallery in London and remains admired for its striking contrast, graceful movement, and poetic sense of stillness.What's included:
